A common question we get: is polystyrene safe for indoor use? The short answer is yes. Our panels use food-contact-grade PS resin - the same material category as disposable cutlery and yogurt cups. There's no formaldehyde, no VOC off-gassing, no heavy metals in the formulation. Unlike MDF and plywood that emit formaldehyde for years after installation, PS panels are inert the day they go up and stay inert. Let's be honest about the limitations, because every material has them. Standard polystyrene is combustible - it will burn if exposed to an open flame. Our standard grade achieves Class E fire rating (EN 13501), and we offer a flame-retardant additive version that pushes it to Class D for commercial projects. The FR formulation slows ignition and reduces flame spread, but it's not non-combustible like cement board or mineral wool. What this means in practice: don't install these panels directly behind open-flame stoves, fireplaces, or BBQ areas. For kitchen walls, keep at least 60cm clearance from the cooktop, or use a stainless steel or glass backsplash behind the stove itself. For hotel and commercial projects requiring higher fire ratings, we'll tell you upfront if PS isn't the right material rather than oversell it.
